Geneva:  Geneva, the Fillmore County seat, was added to the short list of cities when it was recently designated as an Economic Development Certified Community by the Nebraska Diplomats.

"Attainment of the Nebraska Economic Development Certified Community designation spotlights those communities that are prepared for business growth and ready, today, to meet the needs of companies seeking new business and industrial locations," Nebraska Diplomats President Roger Christianson said in a news release.

Accepting a plaque from Governor Dave Heinemann during the Diplomats weekend were John Westfall, Chairman of the Geneva City Council; Rod Norrie, Mayor; Barb Whitley, City Clerk; Patt Lentfer, Fillmore County Development Corporation, Executive Director; and Carolyn Ackermann, City Councilwoman.

Each community designated as a Certified Community completed a rigorous application process administered by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development to qualify.

Geneva is concentrating on retaining and expanding its base of businesses and industries, and positioning itself to attract new opportunities.  Sunflower Marketing just celebrated its 15th year of business in Geneva in June.  Built in 1992, the plant added a warehouse in 1998.  Fairmont's Advanced BioEnergy ethanol plant will start producing ethanol in October.

"The designation shows that the strong leadership in Geneva is ready for economic development," Lentfer said.  "We're positioning ourselves for economic growth and keeping Geneva and Fillmore County a very viable place to do business."
